Kasungu itself is a busy market town about 130km north of Malawi's capital Lilongwe which is itself the centre for the sale, processing and export of Malawi's huge tobacco crop. The country is the largest exporter in the world of burley tobacco and much tobacco of this type is grown on large estates and smallholdings around Kasungu.

Not far from Kasungu is Kamuzu Academy, the famed 'Eton in the bush'. This very impressive school was established by the Founder of modern Malawi and the country's first President Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda and is named after him.
