There
are three kinds of accommodation available in Malawi - standard
business fare in the cities of Lilongwe and Blantyre; quality
tourist resorts along the lakeshore and, almost everywhere,
very economical guesthouses and backpacker establishments.
The Lake resorts vary in both facilities offered and rates.
In the south the most luxurious (and easily accessible)
have excellent service and a variety of water activities.
Also dotted around the lake are smaller establishments offering
fabulous beaches, blue-mountain vistas, baobabs, palm trees
and brilliant bougainvillea.
Prices
When translated into dollars, many places seem astonishingly
cheap. Malawi attracts many budget travellers and there
are plenty of establishments providing hearty meals at low
prices and simple accommodation or camping facilities.
Booking
There are sometimes problems with getting through be telephone
to Malawi - especially during the rainy season and for this
reason email is not always reliable. Telephone numbers and
contact details of accommodation and other facilities are
given in a separate Tourism Department leaflet.
Club
Makokola
Very up market - and very popular - with plenty of beach
and sporting activities, including golf, nightly entertainment
and very good food. There is an airstrip behind the hotel
so guests can fly in. Air
Malawi provides a regular service linking with
flights to Johannesburg.
Sunbird
Nkopola Lodge
Tastefully built into a lakeshore cliff with excellent entertainment
facilities especially at weekends, it offers excellent food
and accommodation right on the beach. One of the classic
pictures of Malawi is of a couple sitting under a thatched
umbrella at Sunbird Nkopola Lodge. Next door to the Lodge
is Nkopola Beach Club, offering family style (and cheaper)
accommodation.
Palm
Beach Resort
More like a village than a resort, set in lovely gardens
surrounded by palm trees. Great bar and restaurant. Chalets
and camping facilities. Good fishing available.
Sun
and Sand Holiday Resort
Reasonably priced chalets and self catering cottages in
spacious grounds, which include a magnificent olympic sized
pool. The conference facilities here are comprehensive and
deservedly popular.
