Places
to stay around Salima
Salima is
a basic market town -useful for its supermarket, pharmacy and
bank. It's not really a place to linger but within fifteen kilometres
there are a variety of beach resorts at a variety of prices.
Le
Meridien Livingstonia Beach, is one of the best hotels
on Lake Malawi, providing a dignified setting for the usual lakeside
activity of enjoying oneself. It offers fine dining and simply
but elegantly furnished rooms. The management arranges day trips
to interesting places on request.
The Steps
Campsite is right next door under the same management, and is
known as one of the better places to camp in Malawi.
There are
several low budget resthouses in the area and, south towards Kambiri
point, a variety of places on the shore.
From The Wheelhouse
you can enjoy wonderful sunsets from the raised-deck bar. There
is also a choice of La Casa Blance, Crystal Waters, Kambiri Lakeshore
Hotel and Carolina's. Recently opened is eco-resort Safari
Beach Lodge (in Senga bay Forest Reserve close by the
Livingstonia Beach hotel), offers rooms and luxury tents right
on Lake Malawi. It is on a secluded beach with an a la carte restaurant
(German/international cuisine) with superb hiking and bird-watching
in the reserve. The Red Zebra restaurant near the entrance to
Le Meridien Livingstonia Beach,
is named after one of the more colourful cichlids and offers an
excellent choice of lake fish.
