Northernmost ports of call

Karonga
You could disembark here and travel on to Tanzania or back down the lake by bus. There is a basic, clean accommodation available at reputable places like Club Marina and a steady through traffic of overlanders coming from elsewhere in Africa to visit Malawi.

Chilumba
A good place to get off if you want to visit Livingstonia. Only very basic accommodation is available here.

Chitimba
There are several beach resorts in this area, which are both basic and inexpensive.
